Phoenix From The Ashes Aerie was captured and sold into slavery when she was young, ending up on display in a circus freakshow. However, poor conditions and the fact that she was unable to use her wing muscles in the tiny cage she was placed in caused her wings to atrophe and become infected. Eventually, they had to be cut off finally severing her completely from her family, home and people.
