Myths and Legends

'Ere be beasties

Of course, no sci-fi writer these days can get by without knowing at least the basics of Classical Greek mythology.

Names like 'Prometheus' and the 'Odyssey' are indelibly stamped all over sci-fi. As if Ancient Greece is considered some high point in Civilization, even though as discussed on my history page, they had the chance at an industrial revolution centuries before it actually happened. But they blew it. Clearly they weren't as smart as they thought they were. Toga wearing twits.

But be that as it may, humankinds attempts to explain the world around them through Gods and Monsters and other manner of magical beastie is yet another subject that always fascinates me. In a way, looking at this stuff is like returning to my youth. Its thinking back to a time when much of the world was still unexplored, when there was still wonder and mystery everywhere. Ahhh, to have lived in those times... of course, unlike in my youth, there was also plague and syphilis everywhere...

But anyway, this page isn't just about Greek myth. It's about myths from all over the world. All thoroughly researched of course; I've got dozens of books I've not returned to the library yet.

And there may be some things that surprise you. For example, did you know that the Atlantians decribed by Plato weren't really all that advanced in science and technology? Or that The Book of Revelation doesn't actually mention the 'rapture' or the 'anti-christ' at all?

If you didn't, then, stay tuned. All that and more is to come.
