Chauncey (Chance) Delainy

Chance

Race: Human

Occupation: Journalist

Homeworld: Pheia

Age: 30

Height: 5’10”

Chauncey’s mother was the sister of Jim Jamison – one of the most notorious criminals on Pheia - although she never had any interest in the family business. Nevertheless she became involved with one of her brother’s associates; he fled after she became pregnant, fearing what her brother would do. She fled too, after Chauncey was born, although for different reasons; it was said that one night she visited an ancient tomb in the woods near her family home, and something she saw there frightened her so much that she ran all the way to The Capitol and changed her name.

She began working in a munitions factory, barely making enough to support her and her son. Nevertheless she worked tirelessly to provide her son with the best possible education, paying for him to go to school and feeding his imagination with books. Chauncey grew up fascinated by The Republic’s Star Engines and the possibilities of exploring outer space.

But the years working with chemicals, breathing in toxic fumes took a terrible toll on his mother’s health. She became weak and died in her mid-thirties, when Chauncey was sixteen. His outlook changed after that; he began to question The Republic more and the wisdom of the rapid industrial transformation on Pheia, becoming more withdrawn from others. He eventually took a job as a science journalist, but still lives on his own.

Although a misanthrope, Chance does care about people and won’t turn away from those in need; this paradox of hating humanity whilst wanting to save it has been pointed out to him many times. He also does still possess some of the wonderment at science and the universe that his younger self had, although he tends to be more quiet about it now.
