Soraya is an intellectual and scholar from the desert planet, Rysir. She was part of the elite on that planet; her parents were scientific advisors to the King and Queen. When she was small and her parents were involved in meetings, she was left to play with the daughter of the High Priest, Neftis. The two never became friends however; as they grew up together they argued constantly and even fought several times.
Soraya always won all the fights, but once they were fully grown Neftis became the High Priestess and grew close to The King, manipulating him so that her power and influence grew. Soraya’s parents were still advisors to the new King, Neftis then set a trap for them, catching them conspiring and accusing them of treason and plotting to overthrow the King. They were executed.
Soraya was away from home when she learned of this, and that Neftis’ soldiers were searching for her too. Soraya swore revenge and infiltrated the temple to assassinate the High Priestess. Her attempt failed, as did her subsequent attempts to incite the other nobles into rebellion; Neftis’ grip on them had become too strong, and so Soraya was forced to flee Rysir.
The Silver Republic refused to become involved with the internal politics of Rysir; so long as their taxes were being paid they didn’t care who was in charge. But Soraya made contact with a faction of pirates who provided her with transport off world.
She has since travelled the galaxy on various expeditions trying to learn more of the science and technology of the Gold Age, perhaps in the hope of discovering something that will enable to defeat Neftis and free her world.
